Why we started this
Years of retainer invoices. Domain Authority unchanged. No high-quality backlinks to show for it.
For years, I paid the dominant SEO agency in the city. Top rankings, strong reviews, the kind of firm you hire because it looks like the safe choice.
The invoices kept arriving. The monthly reports looked reasonable. I kept paying on the assumption that a top-ranked SEO firm had to know what it was doing.
Then they called to upsell a larger retainer. I asked one question: “Send me the list of backlinks you’ve built for my site.”
Four or five low-value placements came back. That was it. After years of retainer payments, Domain Authority had not moved a single point. Nothing from a reputable publication. Nothing that actually builds trust with search engines.
I ended the contract that week. Lucas—a developer who had worked inside the same agency—was leaving at the same time. One side of the engagement paying the bills. One side watching what was actually being delivered. Neither of us liked what we saw.
We started this business because it shouldn’t be this hard to get honest, competent SEO. If the top-ranked agency in a major Canadian city operates that way, the problem isn’t one agency. It’s the retainer model itself.
